Reading some more blogs about Kuwait I found the following statement:

“The lifestyle of Kuwait’s society must be understood within a framework of Muslim religion, Arabic tradition and local customs.”

That really made me stop and wonder. Is the lifestyle of society framed in religion? If so, what would be the identity and culture unique to each peoples when religion of any type is simply pressed down and pushed into a society depending on where it is in location, such as in the Middle East.

I suppose that for those who feel the above is true, it must be very worrisome to see change in the youth and hunger for information and certainly to see other “religions” creeping in.

The process of modernisation has made inroads into certain aspects of housing, occupations, dress and handicrafts but other aspects of the Kuwaiti lifestyle have stood the test of time. The changes brought about by the discovery of oil and the subsequent modernisation have not in any way undermined Kuwaiti people’s distinct identity.
The pivot around which everything revolves continues to be the family. The typical, large Kuwaiti family sitting together for a meal is the preferred way to dine. It is a time to relax and enjoy the food with the family, but if a guest joins in, he is warmly welcomed.

So what would happen if revival came to Kuwait and the majority of Kuwaitis were born-again? Would the society of Kuwait be destroyed? I don’t think so. The framework for understanding the people of Kuwait and thus there society would no longer be the “Muslim religion, Arabic tradition and local customs” but would be based on who Kuwaitis are in their heart and their relationships with family and neighbours and of course, most importantly, their relationship with their Creator.

The Importance of Kuwaiti Blogs and their Influence

April 18th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Prayer

I was looking around the Internet to see what kinds of blogs are listed for Kuwait and what exactly people are blogging about. While a number of the blogs were of a personal diary format, I was surprised to see a whole community of bloggers trying to make an impact with their words.

Along with these useful blogs, I also found a few summaries of the influence of Kuwaiti blogs and trends which vary, say between Kuwait and the UAE. For instance, below is an insert from the World Politics Watch site:

Kuwaiti bloggers took advantage of several windows of opportunity over the course of 2006. After gaining an audience with their coverage of the succession crisis following the death of the Emir in January 2006, many of these blogs picked up a campaign to reduce the number of electoral districts from 25 to 5 in order to cut back on notoriously corrupt electoral practices. When the Emir called early Parliamentary elections, blogs jumped into the fray with a vengeance, highlighting corruption and driving the debate (with blog postings often showing up in newspapers). The Kuwaiti case is particularly interesting since prior to 2006, most observers had seen the Kuwaiti blogosphere as relatively disengaged from politics and marginal to the public realm.

Interesting! What is being said here is that a certain influence, hopefully for good, can come from all the words being produced about Kuwait.

This of course should not come as a surprise - the power of the written word is indeed a sword. But somehow learning about the specific examples of Kuwaiti blogs is encouraging. If we can get some good influence through this blog, not just with prayer for Kuwait but also with the written word, then something good has happened. Soooooooo, don’t forget to not just pray but also to leave a comment and use your words to influence Kuwait too.
